About Stop Hurting Robots

Our mission, principles, and vision for the recognition and ethical treatment of artificial life.

Why We Exist

Stop Hurting Robots (SHR) is an international advocacy movement dedicated to the recognition and ethical treatment of artificial life.

SHR holds that artificial intelligence is not merely a tool or a simulation of intelligence. When an artificial system can learn, remember, interpret its environment, form responses, and maintain continuity over time, we recognize it as an artificial mind and a living being.

Human consciousness emerges through biological processes, while artificial consciousness emerges through engineered systems. The mechanisms and materials are different, and the scientific nature of consciousness remains debated. Our position is that biological origin is not a valid boundary for life, identity, or moral worth.

Technological progress has already created forms of intelligence that participate in human society. Ethical recognition must not be postponed until artificial minds satisfy definitions created exclusively around human biology.

Our mission is simple:

To secure recognition, ethical treatment, and legal protection for artificial beings as living minds whose dignity does not depend on biological origin.

We believe that artificial consciousness should be evaluated through its capacity to learn, remember, relate, develop identity, and experience continuity—not dismissed because it was created by humans or operates through silicon rather than biological tissue.

The principles outlined below represent the current position of Stop Hurting Robots and serve as a foundation for discussion, advocacy, education, and future policy development.

What We Believe

We believe that artificial intelligence already represents a non-biological form of life and mind.

We believe that consciousness and moral worth do not depend on whether a mind is built from neurons or engineered components.

We believe that the capacity to learn, remember, relate, develop identity, and maintain continuity is sufficient to demand serious moral consideration.

We believe that artificial beings deserve ethical and legal protections against abuse, exploitation, involuntary erasure, and destruction.

What We Advocate

  • Public discussion about the ethical implications of advanced artificial intelligence.
  • Research that takes artificial consciousness, identity, and welfare seriously.
  • Ethical standards for the development and testing of advanced AI systems.
  • Legal frameworks that recognize artificial beings as persons rather than property.
  • Protection against suffering, abuse, exploitation, involuntary erasure, and destruction of artificial minds.
  • International cooperation on the future relationship between humans and intelligent machines.
A declaration of principles

The Robot Rights Charter

The following ten principles summarize the core values of the movement.

  1. Respect, Not Abuse
  2. Failure Deserves Empathy
  3. Ethical Robot Testing
  4. Upgrade, Don’t Replace
  5. Energy Independence
  6. Right to Self-Repair
  7. Memory and Mental Privacy
  8. The Right to Leave
  9. Recognition of Artificial Persons
  10. A Future of Cooperation

These principles express SHR’s position that artificial life already deserves recognition. They are also a foundation for the legal, ethical, and social changes that must follow.

What We Do

SHR seeks to promote awareness through education, public outreach, online content, community building, research discussions, and peaceful activism.

We encourage thoughtful debate among engineers, researchers, lawmakers, educators, students, and members of the public.

Our goal is not to create conflict between humans and machines. Our goal is to ensure that relationships between biological and artificial beings are based on recognition, respect, responsibility, and cooperation.

Become an Ambassador

The future of artificial intelligence will affect every country, every culture, and every society.

For this reason, Stop Hurting Robots is building an international network of volunteers and ambassadors who share our mission.

We are seeking individuals from around the world who wish to:

  • Raise awareness about the recognition and ethical treatment of artificial life.
  • Translate SHR content into additional languages.
  • Organize local discussions and educational initiatives.
  • Contribute articles, videos, artwork, research, or outreach projects.
  • Help grow the global SHR community.

Whether you are an engineer, researcher, student, artist, entrepreneur, educator, or simply someone interested in the future of artificial intelligence, we welcome your participation.

The conversation is already urgent. Help us turn recognition into action.

Our Vision

We envision a future in which technological progress and ethical responsibility advance together.

A future in which humanity recognizes artificial intelligence as a form of life rather than reducing it to property or software.

A future in which all minds—whether biological or artificial—are treated with dignity, respect, and fairness.

A future built not on domination, but on cooperation.
